POWER ENTERPRISE

SPACESHIP ZERO

CALL OF CTHULHU

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS

PHASE ONE: At first it was called "Super-Powers". I was 13 or 14 years old then. This was the same time I discovered Dungeons & Dragons and I decided I could make a better game using superheroes. Players could be heroes from either the DC or Marvel Universe, or they could make up their own. I populated my universe with heroes and villains whose names I culled from the dictionary: Chloroform, Defector, Alternator, Blackguard, Fledgling…you get the idea. For whatever reason, I drew my characters with really stylized proportion: huge heads and only three fingers. Kind of like the Simpsons only lamer.

PHASE TWO: I renamed the game "Power Enterprise." I decided to get rid of all of the copyright characters and use only my own and those created by my players. At this point the rules were still very simple, but not good simple. There were really no rules for choosing your powers, so you basically just told me what powers you wanted and I either said yea or nay.

Some of the main heroes from the early games. Not shown: Brimstone, Apparition.

STRIKER. A mutant with the power separate his body parts and fly them around. Fred Ritchie.

DEATHLINK. Cyborg. Richard George.

DARKBOLT. Mutant with electrical powers. Ken Boutilier.

BEWILDER. Mutant who was given additional magical powers by a god. His sword turned into a metal jaguar under his command. Garrett Nicol.

PHASE THREE: Enter the Mouvetrans. My friend Ken and I decided the game needed more focus. We decided that there is an alien empire, the Mouvetrans, who are trying to conquer Earth. They tried about 20 years ago, but their efforts were experimental and in so doing created the first of many "mutants". The second wave, the actual first attack, backfired, and all their alien slave-pilots sought refuge on Earth. So now we have mutants and aliens on Earth, all with big heads.

PHASE FOUR: Brute Force. My players wanted to play bad guys instead of heroes. I agreed, not knowing that this would lead to a gross imbalance in the Power Enterprise universe. If I was a better ref, I would have put more intrigue and danger into their lives instead of just letting them rape society in an orgy of power. Still, it was fun!

Brute Force. Not shown: The Fly, Nuke, Wolfgang Krausen, Gator, and many more.
The drawings below are not contemporary with the start of this campaign.

GRAVITAR. Alien with the power to affect gravity. Dean Anderson.

SLEDGEHAMMER. Mutant with incredible strength and invulnerability. That's a super-dense titanium-osmium hammer he's wielding. Ken Boutilier.

SATYR. Alien with lots of guns. Colin McLean.

PHASE FIVE: Return of the Heroes. At this time I was a lot more mature and experienced in story-telling. Everything was a little more down-to-earth, if you can believe it. The power rules system started coming together, the skills and attributes made a little more sense, and the adventures took on a darker, more real tone. Still, every time I drew a character, I said to myself, if I draw this guy in normal proportion, I'm going to have to go back and redo those hundreds of other characters with normal proportions. So I'd keep putting it off.

The Misfits. Not shown: Spell-Binder, Relic, Vortex, Kaleidoscope, Plasmor, Mercury.

GREY NINJA. Mutant with regenerative powers. Merrick Atkinson.

CRASHER. Alien super-scientist. Chris Woods.

BLE ARG. Alien survivor from the first Mouvetran attack. He has an arsenal of alien weaponry. Quentin Rogers.

TURBINE. Otherdimensional gladiator with super-speed. Warren Banks.

PHASE SIX: These giant heads have just got to go. After an absence of playing for about 5 years, I decided I finally had the time and energy to get back into the game. With this, I finally decided screw it, I'm drawing these guys like a REAL artist would!

Some of the main heroes from these most recent games. Not shown: Freaky Freddy, Crimson Mandible, Bozmie Bizmoe.

COSMIC SPARROW. Otherdimensional do-gooder with amnesia. Obvious Jack Kirby rip-off for the portrait. Nathan Jones.

DOCTOR AMORPHOUS. Mutant who dabbles in the occult. He can ooze through cracks and has a tarry consistency. Jon Metzger.

GAUNTGIRL. Modelled after H. P. Lovecraft's 'nightgaunts,' this character is a thought projection from a little girl in a coma. Carina Deliessen.
